Tehuantepec, a town located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, is situated near the Gulf of Tehuantepec, an arm of the Pacific. Its inhabitants are predominantly Zapotec, as the population of Oaxaca is dominated by the Mixtec and Zapotec peoples. Tehuantepec is celebrated for its strikingly dressed women, called Tehuanas. A distinctive feature of the Tehuana costume, the "tocado", or head-piece,  made of pleated fabric trimmed with lace,  points to the influence of Spanish culture on the traditional style of dress.
